2. Digital Color Theorie

Length: 12:34 min

Before we edit anything, understand how we perceive color is important and there’s quite a distinction with digital colors too! This chapter is a great way of visualizing color theory. We compare the traditional color wheel to see the color harmonies vs how we actually edit color through the digital color wheel.

Let’s also take a look at how something called subtractive and additive models and how they make up our existing six main colors in digital imaging. We look through practical examples of the color wheel and how hue, saturation, and color can be modified with existing tools in Photoshop.

This should give you a total visual understanding of how colors interact with each other and how light is broken down into the primary colors.

3. Color Grading

Length: 10:40 min

Prior to going into color grading, we look at the proper color management, settings, and considerations. Jan talks about sources of inspiration and the purpose of how color can change the story of your photographs through a few examples of personal and commercial work.

4. Color Grading Methods in Capture One Pro

Length: 26:33 min

To be able to color grade you must also have the ability to know the tools required to modify these colors in the most efficient ways possible! From selecting specific colors to bringing tones together, we look at how to use the main tools in capture one using a few examples. These tools include layers, masking, color temperature and tint, color editor, skin tone editor, skin tone brush, color balance, and layer opacities.

5. Hands On – Capture One – Fashion Image

Length: 27:33 min

Across these images we focus on separating the elements using the flexible layers and masking options the program offers. Some of the other tools that Jan jumps into are gradient tools, curves, hand masking, white balance, and tonal contrast among others.

You’ll get to see how you can use the color wheel to play with color harmonies in order to modify them individually. Picking items like the sky and combining them with different tools within Capture One will give you a great idea for workflow for color work.

6. Hands On – Photoshop – Fashion Image

Length: 52:56 min

After processing the raw files in Capture One, Jan works in Photoshop to showcase his retouching workflow. He starts with pixel layers and removes objects that are very distracting. Along the way he uses tools like the clone brush in combination with the pen tool to get a clean image. You’ll get to see his thought process as he analyzes what to remove and what to keep.

The process continues with controlling luminosity of the image followed by color grading. The methods used bring the image to life.

Jan will also demonstrate how to use use smart objects and libraries in order to create consistencies between images in a series of images.

His color grading workflow alone is simply magic, showcasing how he splits up the control into each region from highlights, shadows, and midtones, and the process he uses to do that! He accompanies that with a unique way of controlling the brightness of each region together.

7. Hands On Photoshop – Sports Team

Length: 22:25 min

Sports images are great because they’re always full of life and color. This section is a great example of how to create really impactful colors. With this composite image, Jan will be color grading both the background and subject in a way where they blend really well together. This also includes matching exposures with various curves and blend modes along with the color.

Seeing him analyze inconsistencies between the subject and background helps to ensure it doesn’t happen with your own images. Also seeing how he matches the colors of both environments can be carried over to multiple genres.

Jan demonstrates how he uses channel masks in order to modify luminosity to create a powerful impact to finish off the final image.

8. Hands On Photoshop – Sports Image 2

Length: 23:25 min

This second video really drives the point home and takes it further. We combine both a composite of a background and an image of a sports player. Jan will first show you the build up of the background image starting from a bright scene and turning it into a rainy night scene. He’ll be using an image of a subject where colors don’t match at all to use with the background. You’ll see how to create a game plan and making adjustments step by step in order to make the background and foreground match.

Finally going through the color grading process similar to the previous lesson really shows that these techniques can make colors match really well no matter how different these two scenes are. Everything from adjusting the exposure, contrast, tonality, and color individually and in a systematic way is a great for having full control.

This lesson also introduces specific control of sharpness to create a really strong impact as a finishing step. The final combination of everything really shows you how you can make imagery look cinematic and commercial.

9. Hands On Photoshop – Portrait

Length: 33:44 min

The focus of this course is color grading portraits. This is a great addition to the series because portraits require their own set of considerations especially when different emotions are at play and skin tones are of utmost importance.

In the beginning Jan starts with adjusting brightness of the highlights, midtones and shadows and demonstrates just how important light is to color. They compliment each other in how impactful the colors can show through.

Like the previous video, we start with setting up the workflow for each region of the image. For portraiture having precise control is so important because you get to drive the emotion and feel of the image and seeing how it’s done effectively relates to any genre.

10. Color Grading Reverse Engineering

Length: 22:21 min

Have you ever looked at another image and wondered how they color graded it? Would you like to extract that color grade to use on your own images or even see what it looked like before the color work was done? This is the video for you! Jan breaks down the technical way of looking at an image and using tools in Photoshop to do just that!

This lesson will be a tool you will be able to carry over to other images you see! it helps in strengthening your eye and you’ll truly be able to understand what you’re looking at when you see a photo in the wild. It beautifully compliments our other videos perfectly!

Not only will you see the methods of which colors are extracted and analyzed, but the critical thinking needed to pick the perfect parts of an image to reference and just why it should be done that way.

To drive the principles home, Jan shows how you take the color grade from one image and to transfer it to other images that don’t have a similar starting point. Seeing this process is truly magic!

11. Workflow Automation

Length: 6:24 min

For complex workflows, we take a look at how Libraries can be used to save multiple workflows to expedite the retouching process and what is typically included in it. He will be breaking it down and explaining why he typically arranges his layers accordingly for his client work. This also expedites the creation of folders and layers with a series of images to make retouching faster. This includes the order of dodge and burn, retouching, color grading and sharpening.
